The project organization of PASC is depicted in the figure on the right.

The Steering Committee consists of the presidents or rectors of the universities that co-signed PASC (USI, University of Geneva, Zurich, as well as EPFL and ETH Zurich). It approves all major funding decisions, and nominates upon recommendations from the Project Director the members of the project leadership, the Scientific advisory Committee (SAC), and the members of the User Reference Group (URG) that represent the communities in the Scientific Networks.

The Project Leadership consists of

  • the Project Director (Thomas Schulthess), who is responsible for all strategic aspects of PASC, oversees interactions with industry as well as with the SAC and the URG, and reports to the steering committee. Furthermore, he is making sure the developments of the Domain Science Networks and Co-design Projects and the system construction projects at CSCS are aligned
  • the Domain Science Coordinator (Michele De Lorenzi),
  • and the Co-design Projects Coordinator (Olaf Schenk).

The Domain Science Networks with research groups from Swiss universities defining a common roadmap and developing scientific codes. To every Domain Science Network are appointed

  • a Network PI (Principal Investigator) in charge to represent the research groups,
  • Application Support Staff with dual roles. On the one hand, they are personal points of contacts for existing and new HPC users at their home institutions. As such they are in a service role that is usually provided by institutional and departmental IT organizations. On the other hand, they are anchored in one or more of the ongoing community code developments, where they participate in the HPC parts for the projects. These experts will receive continued training in emerging architecture and programming models from CSCS
  • and a CSCS Liaison assuring the contact with CSCS.

The Co-design Projects consists of projects selected via peer review process.

The Project Office with Benedetto Lepori and Paola Colferai is managed by the Universit della Svizzera italiana. It is responsible for the project controlling and coordination of the different activities.

The Scientific advisory Committee (SAC) members are international experts from the computer industry as well as labs that are involved in similar co-design projects. The project director proposes candidates to the steering committee. The members of the SAC are:

  • Bruce Harmon, Ames Laboratory and Iowa State University
  • David Keyes, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology
  • Thomas Lippert, J├╝lich Supercomputing Centre
  • Jeffrey Nichols, Oak Ridge National Laboratory
  • William Tang, Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory

The CSCS User Reference Group (URG) is a standing committee of professors from Swiss Universities that represents the user community and advises the CSCS director. Each of the Scientific Networks is represented in the user reference group. In the context PASC, the user reference group advises the project leadership on how to prioritize the directions to be taken in the co-design pillar.
